Deskripsyon

Utility poles have been installed in the middle of the sidewalk, making it impossible to use a wheelchair or wide stroller. This is a violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act. Although this photo is around Sirum & Co., 295 Deerfield Street, there are poles in the sidewalk on this side of the road all the way to 126 Deerfield and perhaps beyond. Even if the State has charge of this section of the road, they are not exempt from the requirements of the ADA and Public Right of Way guidelines.

There has not been any change. I drove from where Washington Street starts, very close to where Deerfield connects to Bank Row, all the way down to Cheapside, where the town of Deerfield begins at the bridge over the Deerfield River. There are obstructions in the sidewalk the entire way. Utility poles, light posts, and even fire hydrants.

They are compliant I can make it through with two wheelchairs

Glad to hear you can make it through. The requirement, so everybody has a chance to get through, is contained on Code of Massachusetts Regulations 521, Architectural Access Board. It states in Section 22.2
WIDTH
Width of walkways shall be not less than 48 inches (48"= 1219mm), excluding curb stones. An unobstructed path of travel shall be provided which is at least 36 inches (36" = 914mm) clear, excluding curb stones.
If there is 3' of room to get around all these obstacles, i yield. Wouldn't want to run that obstacle course with a power wheelchair or a double stroller.

Haven't been down that way, but am guessing this will be a long process, involving deciding who was responsible in the first place, where the money comes from, and some better weather.
